Police seize counterfeit cigarettes worth over R300 000

MEYERTON. - The men in blue have been applauded for their outstanding work over the weekend after they managed to seize counterfeit cigarettes in Walkers Fruit Farms in Meyerton.

Police Spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo says, “Members of the SAPS K9 unit together with members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department arrived on the scene and found one suspect on the scene.

During their search, police managed to find about 3125 cartoons of counterfeit Royal and Chelsea cigarettes.

Police confiscated the cigarettes that are estimated to have a value of R312 500.

“3125 cartons of counterfeit Royal and Chelsea cigarettes were seized.”

Masondo stated that the suspect offered the members a bribe of R29900 for his release but instead the loyal police officers added a charge of bribery and further arrested the suspect.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has since hailed the law enforcement members for upholding their oath of office and not accepting a bribe.
