Mountain bikers take to the veld at Summer Fast One

EIKENHOF. – Hundreds of mountain bikers took to the open veld South of Johannesburg on Sunday morning during the Summer Fast One 2020 Mountain Bike race which started and ended at the Rand Water Central Depot.

The event featured several races, including 65km race, a 40km race, a 10km race and a 3km kiddies ride. Although riders described the 65km race as technical and challenging, both the 40km and 10km rides were fairly fast and flat, covering a mixture of jeep and single tracks. The route took
riders through the Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate and a nearby wetland.
Timo Cooper, last year’s runner-up, took the win with a time of 02:18:15 this year. Cobus van den Berg finished a mere 40 seconds behind Cooper in a time of 02:18:55.

The leading men in the 40km race on their way to the finish line. Setting the
pace in front is Blaine Kieck (who eventually finished in fourth place),
followed by Jacques Marais (second place), Francois Botes (winner) and
Keanu Selby (third place).

David Cooke managed to earn himself a podium position by finishing third with a time of 02:19:44. In the ladies race it was Mariske Smith
who won with a time of 02:38:59. She was followed by Steph Wohlters in second place with a finishing time of 02:38:59 and Jenny Oosthuizen in third place with a finish time of 02:54:27. Francois Botes won the 40km men’s race in a time of 01:20:10 after joining a four-man breakaway group consisting out of Jacques Marais (second; 01:20:15), Keanu Selby (third; 01:20:21) and Blaine Kieck (fourth place). Engela Conradie won the 40km women’s race with a time of 01:22:48. Simone Jacobs finished second with a time of 01:33:21, with Andiswe Skeyi took third place with a time of 01:34:36.
