SEDIBENG.- The South African Students Congress (SASCO) has called on Universities and Colleges to allow all academically deserving prospective students an opportunity to apply for any instructional offering of their choice.

The organisation said that over 50% of young people in the country are not in education institutions and are unemployed, majority being those with no primary qualification.

“Our universities and colleges are meant to up-skill and create more entrepreneurial skills for young people. Our SASCO cadres on the ground must be combat ready to fight any reactionary institution that will block students from poor and working class backgrounds. No institution must turn away walk-in applicants.”

The organisation said that it will also be tracking registration at all TVET Colleges across the country.

“We are against the reduction of colleges into mini-universities. We are against the offering of commercial courses in TVET Colleges that are by the way also offered by University of technologies and traditional universities. We will be forcing TVET Colleges to admit and register more students enrolling for engineering courses to feed into labour force that will support developmental goals of our country. We wish to caution our parents and prospective students against bogus colleges.”

SASCO warned universities to open for late applications, it also warned officials who take bribes and demand sexual favours from students.

“We warn Universities like Wits & Tuks to open for late applications like all institution because there is no deserving student that shall not study. We send words of encouragement to our ground activists and command them to be vigilant to ensure that we decisively deal with those who ask for bribes, sexual favours and so on.”
