SANBS Mobile Donor Centre launched at Vaal Mall

SANBS applauds its regular donors, who comprise just 1% of the South African population.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The South African National Blood Services introduced its brand new one-of-a-kind mobile donor centre at Vaal Mall today (18 December 2019).
“For us to continue to maintain a stable supply of healthy, safe blood and blood products, we are prompted to make our services more accessible to donors, while encouraging people to become regular donors,” says Silungile Mlambo, Chief Marketing Officer for SANBS.
Thanks to mobile donor centres it will now be even quicker, easier and more comfortable to donate blood and save lives.
All SANBS mobile clinics will be equipped with the best amenities including comfortable donor chairs, TV, Wi-Fi, Nespresso coffee and friendly service to provide donors with the best donation experience.
SANBS applauds its regular donors, who comprise just 1% of the South African population. These donors ensure the target of 3 500 units per day is maintained.
Although more blood is needed during school holidays and long weekends when there is an increase in traffic on our country’s roads, there is a common misconception that most of the blood donated in South Africa is used for accident victims. According to the SANBS this is not the case. Here is a rough breakdown of where your donated blood is used:

* 28% is used to treat patients with cancer and aplastic anaemia
* 27% is used during childbirth
* 21% is used for scheduled surgery
* 10% is used for paediatric care
* 6% goes to laboratories
* 6% is used for orthopaedic care
* 4% is used for accident or trauma victims
