Fugitive leaves clothes behind as he flees police roadblock

SEBOKENG. - A fleeing fugitive fell to the ground and disappeared from six perusing police officers’ sights during a roadblock in Sebokeng last week.

Law enforcement agencies, Gauteng Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, Emfuleni Municipal MMC for Safety, Jan Moshoadiba, Colonel Mxcedisi Mabala and Brigadier Pule Mokoena were conducting the roadblock during an operation dubbed ‘Okae molao’.
They started on the Golden Highway on November 21 at around 08:00 before they went to Moshoeshoe Road. Baffled police officers had to return to their commanders holding only the escapees clothing.
The police who chased him, found only his clothing, shoes, socks, underwear, trousers, t-shirt and a cell-phone on the ground.
The mystery continues as the fugitive had told police he just wanted to get off a bakkie police had pulled over so he could relieve himself.
Mawela, expressed his amazement at what happened and pointed out that one of the fugitive’s pursuers was a young and energetic Constable.
Mawela pointed out that the area in which the fugitive vanished was very open and flat and that there was no way the fugitive could have simply ran off. The suspicion was that the fugitive was an undocumented immigrant, which could have been why he was so determined to evade police.
Colonel Mabala observed that this incident was a good reason why every police roadblock should be equipped with the K9 Unit known as Dog Unit.
In such a case, he said, the fugitive would have been unable to evade them, as the dogs would have chased him down.
