Municipality condemns illegal sale of RDP houses

MIDVAAL. - Although people are always demanding that the government meet their needs to proper housing, it seems like as soon as they are awarded with RDP houses, they will try and sell them to make a quick buck.

This came to light recently when the Midvaal Local Municipality was alerted of the illegal sales of RDP’s by beneficiaries in Savannah City.
The RDP project in Savannah City is one of the newest, consisting of integrated bond houses, low cost houses as well as RDP houses. Midvaal Local Municipality condemned these actions, saying that the sale constitutes an illegal action.
“As per the National Housing Act, the sale of an RDP house is forbidden for eight years after the beneficiary has taken occupation. Residents in need of housing opportunities are advised to register on the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements (GDHS) Housing Demand Database.” says Tabudi
Madisha, Midvaal local Municipality Public Relations Officer. RDP Housing Act 107 of 1997, states that a beneficiary may not sell an RDP house
within the first eight years of having taken occupation. Purchasers of RDP houses have also been warned as the tittle deed will not be issued
to them but to the original beneficiary of the house.
“Midvaal residents who have received subsidised housing in the Savannah City project are urged to value their houses as a great investment.”
