EVATON. – The Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Vaal celebrated its Centenary recently. With the motto: ‘A Christ healed Africa for the healing
of nations’, the history of the church was outlined during the celebrations.
The Methodist started around 1892 and assembled at various schools and homes of the members in the country. At the age of 92, Dorah Makite, speaks about the long marathon establishment of St Luke Methodist in 1955, St Stephens in 1961 in Sharpeville and St Matthews in Bophelong in 1951. Makite said that the West Vaal Circuit – Trinity in Zone 3 is the smallest in the region. Vaal region had three circuit: Orange Farm, Zone 3, 7; West Vaal that includes Sebokeng, Polokong, Vanderbijlpark and third circuit is Vereeniging, Boitshepiville, De Deur and Tree Rivers.
“It is the duty of the church to protect its leaders and preserve the legacy of John Wessley. The aim was to reach out to people of God and touch the lives of the community. The church is not surrounding itself with the walls of the building.”
The church members visited various schools, mentally and physically challenge institutions, and home based care centres to spread the word of God.
