People must pay for services: Magashule

Chabalala continued to say that these municipalities have an unfunded mandate and have no money to render services to the residents.

SEDIBENG. – African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General (SG), Ace Magashule, recently appealed to members of the public to pay for services, so that the municipalities can perform well.

Speaking during an ANC National Executive Committee special meeting, Magashule said municipalities will be enabled to function properly once everyone pays for services.

“It is time for the municipalities to up their game and deliver good services and ensure people pay for those services.” He also warned underperfor- ming municipal officials that strong action will be taken against them.

“The ANC will closely monitor developments in all municipalities it manages as it will not tolerate underperfor-mance. We are talking about consequence management, if you don’t do what is expected of you, it is obvious that action must be taken.”

Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Kingsol Chabalala, said that the Gauteng Provincial Government owes ANC led municipalities over R89 million for utilities and that the amount is already overdue by 120 days.

The Gauteng MEC for Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile, stated that the Emfuleni Municipality is owed a large amount of R49 647 977, 27 and the Lesedi Local Municipality R12 640 646, 25 by Gauteng Provincial Government Departments.

Chabalala continued to say that these municipalities have an unfunded mandate and have no money to render services to the residents.
