You ask yourself, what the heck did Zach smoke, what is he talking about?
I’m talking about football.
I know some won’t agree with TOUCHLINE for several reasons – but the playing conditions are everything when it comes to football. TOUCHLINE can attest to this– that better playing conditions can make a player a better player or they can delay a player’s development. If a player grows up playing in the conditions that are not proper, his or her development will take time. But if he/she plays in better playing conditions he/she will become a better player in a short space of time. This has nothing to do with studies (researches) but with TOUCHLINE’S personal assessment when it comes to player’s development. For example, when the Super League season started some of the teams struggled to adjust to playing on the green grass or should I say turf, because of the new conditions that they were exposed to. But when the league progressed, they improved with each and every game they played. This helped the players to become better players. Playing at venues such as Isak Steyl Stadium and NWU Vaal which are some of the best facilities we have in this region was a blessing. Just imagine our players playing in these facilities every week or weekend – they would become better players and their development would fast track unlike when they play on hard surface soccer grounds. TOUCHLINE knows this is the biggest challenge in townships, this is something that the powers that be must take note of to improve the playing conditions in our communities. This is not only affecting football but also other sporting codes such as Netball, Volleyball and Basketball. It is sad because even school tournaments are now played in the suburbs due to a lack of facilities in townships. Whenever, there are school tournaments that needs more than two fields – Shakespeare Stadium and Isak Steyl Stadium are the first options. This is a big concern to TOUCHLINE because for young players to develop and to reach their full potential they must train and play at the best facilities.
This is the reason why our Safa Sedibeng regional squads don’t perform to their best abilities- these youngsters train and play in poor conditions.
Yes, I agree that the likes of Steve Lekoelea, Thabo Rakgale, Thabo Monyamane, Abia Nale and others grew up playing under the same conditions but really, can we still compare the era of those players with today’s generation?
No way!
