Fathers urged to be there for their kids

“A lot of awareness is made about issues affecting women and girls, but men and young boys are afraid to speak out about their experiences. We want to create a platform where we will be able to engage freely as men and not get any form of judgement.”

SHARPEVILLE. – Two young men from Sharpeville plan to change the way fathers relate to their kids one event at a time.

Daddy Mokhaloane (35) and Serame Matsoso (32) recently held the first annual ‘Father and kids get together’ at the Meadowlands Park in Sharpeville, where only fathers and their children were allowed to enter the premises. Mokhaloane says, “The aim of today’s event is for us fathers to start building strong relationships with our children. We live in a world where fathers are absent and do not make time for their kids. This is the reason why we thought we should take this day and spend it with our kids.”

Matsoso said that it was important for men to especially form strong bonds with their boys.

“A lot of awareness is made about issues affecting women and girls, but men and young boys are afraid to speak out about their experiences. We want to create a platform where we will be able to engage freely as men and not get any form of judgement.”

The pair had invited their friends from various places in the Vaal.

The day was filled with fun team building games suitable for both fathers and their boy and girl children.

The duo said that they would love to see their event grow as this would help many men in the Vaal see the importance of being present in their children’s lives.

“The kids are so happy to be here with their fathers, I must say that it is a pleasant sight to see. We want to make this event bigger and better next year and all the fathers in and around Sharpeville will be invited to come and share this special day with their kids.” Mokhaloane concludes.
