Three family members die mysteriously

SEBOKENG. – Police are investigating the mysterious deaths of three family members who died of apparent monoxide poisoning on Saturday in Extension 21, Westside Park, Sebokeng.

The lone survivor, Sipho Miya (15) alerted the neighbours after regaining conciousness. Police spokesperson Captain Teboho Lephoto said that investigations are continuing into what led to the family member’s death and that the cause of death has not been determined. Lephoto said that the three were found with vomit and that the survivor had told the police that they were fine when they went to bed. They had apparently cooked and warmed themselves on a self made coal stove (brazier). Lephoto said the boy woke up on Sunday at around 05:30am and discovered the scene.
Being dizzy at the time, he managed to run to a neighbour’s home to call for help before he was rushed to hospital. Stella Miya (63) was found in the  Kitchen and Gugu Miya (30), Stella’s daughter, was found lying on a bed in the bedroom while Mpho Dube (12), Gugu’s daughter was found lying face up near the door of the house. All three of them had vomited. The surviving boy had also vomited clear liquid at the gate of the neighbour where he called for help. Community members said that this happened due to a lack of electricity supply in the area and that families had no choice but to burn self made coal stoves (braziers) to cook and to keep warm.

Police have opened an inquest.
