SHARPEVILLE.- Regardless of a lack of resources, the Mngomezulu Boxing Club continued to hoist the Sedibeng flag high when Ndoyisele Blou brought a silver medal home.
This was after he lost on points to Patric Mfaku in the final of the of the Youth and Elite National Open Boxing Championships held in Kimberly in Northern Cape which came to an end over the weekend.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, the young boxer said even though he lost in the final, he was proud of what he achieved as a boxer taking into consideration where he comes from.
Mngomezulu Boxing Club trains under the trees in Tshepiso, Sharpeville.
“When people pass they think we are crazy because we train in an open space and our punching bags hang on trees. But this doesn’t discourage us because we know what we want to achieve.
“ I’m very grateful to have a coach like Oupa Mngomezulu. The man pushes us very hard at training that is why I managed to bring a silver medal home,” Blou told Sedibeng Ster Sport. His sentiments were echoed by Mngomezulu, who is the founder and coach of the Mngomezulu Boxing Club, saying regardless of the lack of resources they will continue to work hard. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport, that this is all about commitment and hard work they put in at training.
“Great things are still coming for this club regardless of our challenges. I have no doubt in my mind that one day we will look back and say – we made our presence felt in South African boxing,” he said.
The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Sports and Recreation Coordinator, Thandoxulo Madikizela linked the success of boxing in Emfuleni to the Gauteng Boxing Academy, this is because most of the boxers from Emfuleni are part of the Gauteng Boxing Academy.
