Clothing the needy during winter

MEYERTON. – The Midvaal Christian Centre (MCC) made a huge effort over the weekend to clothe deprived people from in and around the Meyerton area through their first Street Store.

Hundreds of people received a hot meal and got to choose any item of clothing or shoes of their choice during the event.

The event was held in conjunction with the Midvaal Local Municipality.

In preparation of this important event, the church statrted organising the street store by asking for donations from the community at large, including different stakeholders. Marie le Maitre says. “We were overwhelmed by the generous donation of shoes, clothing, maize meal and soya mince we received.

Our church members gathered early on Saturday, 15 June to transport clothes and shoes from the church grounds to the parking in front of the Meyerton library.

Children had their faces painted and prayers were made for deprived people.

“The Midvaal Christian Centre is privileged to be the 920th Street Store of those being held across the globe.

The Street Store is the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, pop-up charity store, giving away clothes to the poor for free.” The pop-up is made of posters on the sidewalk, and runs entirely on donations. Le Maitre adds that it is a very simple concept. “You bring clothes and shoes you don’t wear and the homeless and needy help themselves.”

The Midvaal Christian Church has thanked the the community of Meyerton that dropped off their clothing at the two Pick n Pay’s (Meyerton and Golfpark) and the children of Vryheidsmonument Primary School in Vereeniging that donated clothing and shoes.

“We also honour the Lord for His faithfulness,.” le Maitre concludes.
