Headsets cause accident

SEBOKENG. – A child crossing the road, with headsets on, is alleged to have been the cause of an accident near Boiketlong informal settlement in Sebokeng last Thursday.

Vereeniging Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda said that at around 6:50 last Thursday, a scholar transport in the form of a brown Toyota Hi Ace minibus was driving on the Waterdal Road near Boiketlong (commonly called, ‘Serope se a benya’) from Vereeniging when the driver noticed the child coming from the side of the informal settlement crossing in front of the vehicle.

“The driver tried to swerve, but went into the direction of the oncoming traffic.His vehicle hit an oncoming white Toyota Quantum that had school children in it,” Funda said.

It is said that the child that was crossing the road had headsets (earphones) on. Both drivers and the school children (exact number unknown) were taken to different hospitals for medical attention as they were in a critical but stable condition. A case of reckless and/or negligent driving is being investigated.
