Plea to back a budding cast of young performers

The Directors - Devon Welmers and Bianca Schulte-Brader - said they have already (optimistically) begun rehearsals for Peter Gordon’s Murdered to Death.

SEDIBENG. – A collective of young, aspiring performers from The Green Room Collaboration desperately needs to raise R12 000 to perform the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights play at Grahamstown National Arts Festival at the end of June.

The fee to the rights to perform the play, payable to the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation, DALRO, is R6 000.

The Directors – Devon Welmers and Bianca Schulte-Brader – said they have already (optimistically) begun rehearsals for Peter Gordon’s Murdered to Death.

“We urgently need to raise the funds so we can bring to fruition our goal – to ensure that our diverse group of creative, talented young student actors get a chance to perform alongside professionals at the Arts Festival. We are hoping that the performers’ families and friends, as well as members of the profession and lovers of the dramatic arts, will volunteer to contribute,” they told Sedibeng Ster.

The vision of the Green Room Collaboration is to create a hub for creative individuals, allowing true expression and exploration in a safe and open space. Bianca Schulter-Brader told Sedibeng Ster that they are doing important work – fostering the future generation of performers in South Africa.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Schulter-Brader said they are grateful to have been accepted to perform three shows at the Grahamstown Art Festival. This will give our students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make their debut within the professional industry.”.

She said they chose this production because they wanted a fun, fast-paced piece with extravagant characters that their cast can really sink their teeth into. The play is laced with wonderful wit and humour and just the right touch of suspense, so it’s also a really enjoyable production for all audiences.

This culturally diverse cast was chosen from learners from five Gauteng high schools (aged between 14 and 19) at open auditions held early this year.

“It’s hugely important for these young actors at the start of their careers to gain exposure at the country’s premier arts festival, performing beside professional actors,” said Devon Welmers. He said any donation, no matter how small, will help tremendously.
