Battery thieves behind bars

Six suspects are behind bars after they were arrested by the police, they had 22 tower batteries estimated with the value of R200 000 in their possession.

SEBOKENG. – Six suspects are behind bars after they were arrested by the police, they had 22 tower batteries estimated to the value of R200 000 in their possession.

The police received a tip off about two vehicles, a bakkie and mini bus, travelling on the N1 near Orange Farms on April 9.

Police spokesperson, Captain Teboho Lephoto said the vehicles were travelling from Bloemfontein towards Johannesburg’s direction. “They were immediately spotted and pulled off the road” he said.

They uncovered 22 tower batteries from different network companies within the six suspects’ possession.

Through further inspection the police found that five of the suspects were foreign nationals and one was South African.

They were all arrested and detained at Orange Farm Police Station. They will appear at the Vereeniging Magistrates Court.

Lephoto said that once the police have gathered all the relevant information, the suspects will briefly appear at the court for the hearing and bail application.
