Boxing champ’s father killed: Alleged shooter to appear in court tomorrow (Monday)

The Vaal Triangle as well as the national and international boxing community are still in shock following news that Danie van Heerden (snr) from Meyerton, was shot on Thursday during a confrontation with a security guard

MEYERTON. – Mr Danie Van Heerden snr. was the father of 13 children including former IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden and MMA fighter Danie “The Pitbull” Van Heerden.

Van Heerden snr. was allegedly shot by a security guard following a heated argument.

Chris flew back to South Africa this weekend from his base in Los Angeles to attend the funeral.

The incident in which Van Heerden snr. was fatally shot, happened near a scrap yard in Meyerton, Midvaal. In an upsetting video – apparently taken with a cell phone by someone in Van Heerden’s vehicle – has subsequently emerged on Facebook.

In the video, the security guard appears to have believed he was being hijacked after Van Heerden snr. took the keys to his vehicle and warned that he would call the police. Although the details around the incident are not yet clear, it was allegedly related to Van Heerden confronting the guard about meat being illegally offloaded from the bakkie.

In the video clip, the security guard can be seen firing at least one shot in Van Heerden’s direction, claiming: “You hijacked me.”

Van Heerden snr. then shouts at him and apparently flings the key back at him, saying: “I never hijacked you … There’s your f***ing key.”

Van Heerden snr. apparently died shortly after he was wounded in the back.

The alleged shooter was arrested after the incident and will appear in the Vereeniging court tomorrow (Monday).
