Khawe remains ELM mayor until further notice

Two months ago Khawe unceremoniously resigned but suspended the resignation as executive mayor of ELM after ELM was placed on Section 139 (semi-administration) by the Provincial leadership of ANC, led by Gauteng Premier David Makhura.

SEDIBENG. – “Jacob Khawe remains Executive Mayor Emfuleni local Municipal (ELM) until he or the municipality announces otherwise.”

These words came from Stanley Gaba who is the manager for Communications, Marketing, Branding and Events at the ELM on Monday.

The outcome of the ANC Provincial Executive Committee held in Pretoria over the weekend saw Khawe elected as ANC Provincial Secretary.

Sedibeng Ster had posed this question to ELM – what does this mean for the residents of Sedibeng?

If it happens that Khawe goes in his new ANC position full time, it means there will have been three mayors within a period of 12 months at the helm of ELM.

Former ELM Executive Mayor, Simon Mofokeng resigned under a cloud of a sexual scandal in November last yearand Robert Thema stepped in for a week before Khawe was inaugurated on November 30, the same year as the official mayor.

Since his appointment Khawe has negotiated deals with two major companies that Emfuleni owes, namely Rand Water and Eskom.

In spite of this, huge service delivery protests arose throughout the area.
