SEBOKENG. – A 32-year-old lost his life over an unused electric heater in Eatonside, Sebokeng, on Sunday. The young man, Simon Mosime, was apparently given the heater by his boss, the owner of a local tuckshop, not knowing that one of his other assistants, a Bangladeshi man, had been saving money in it for some time.
Since winter is here, the deceased had apparently wanted to fix and use it. When the assistant realised that his boss had given his ‘safe’ to Mosime, he apparently ‘went crazy’ and went to the deceased’s home together with nine of his countrymen, one of whom carried a gun. According to the deceased’s grandmother, Martha Mosime (72), the group knocked on his grandson’s shack-door and demanded the heater which he gave to them. After opening it they took the money (R10 000) that was stuffed inside it and forced her grandson to go with them.
The grandmother said that, immediately after they left, she heard gunshots. The young man’s body was later found in a veld not far from his home. Police were called and calm was restored as community members wanted to loot stores belonging to foreigners. “All I want is that they take care of me and my family as he was the family’s sole bread-winner,” said the bereaved grandmother. For peace and stability in the area, other Bangladeshi’s are believed to have assured police and the ward councillor that they would be taking full responsibility for the welfare of the family, including the burial costs of the deceased. Police pleaded with the residents to let the law take its course. The suspects are still on the run.
