Family speaks out on Three Rivers High saga

"The video is only showing half of the incident. There is another video which shows how the incident started and we believe she acted out of frustration. After the incident the child realised that she had not acted accordingly and immediately apologised to the teacher, after which the teacher gave her a hug. She is not an angry child. She is very respectful and a people's person."

VEREENIGING. – A family member close to a Three Rivers High School learner who is seen throwing a teacher with an exercise book in a video that went viral last week says that although what the learner did is wrong, she was acting out of frustration after the teacher allegedly ripped her exercise book which she was using to prepare for a test she was due to write on the day.

“The video is only showing half of the incident. There is another video which shows how the incident started. After the incident the child realised that she had not acted accordingly and immediately apologised to the teacher, after which the teacher gave her a hug. She is not an angry child. She is very respectful and a people’s person.”

Speaking at the school today, the Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi said that the teacher conducted herself in a proffessional manner given the situation, applauding her for being able to keep calm. ” During my brief meeting with the teacher, i gathered that she is humble and committed. We want to assure all teachers that when it comes to the classroom, teachers are in charge. There is no grey area when coming to the classroom. When teachers act accordingly and in the right manner, the Department will cover their backs.”

Lesufi highlighted the fact that there were guidelines which had to be followed by both teachers and learners.”The child has since been removed from the premises for her own protection pending further investigation on the matter.”
