Midvaal Local Municipality senior official dismissed for tender irregularities
The Midvaal Local Municipality has dismissed a senior official in its Waste Management department after being found guilty of having a corrupt relationship with a tender bidder and receiving bribes amounting to more than R1 million.
MIDVAAL . – The Midvaal Local Municipality has dismissed a senior official in its Waste Management department after being found guilty of having a corrupt relationship with a tender bidder and receiving bribes amounting to more than R1 million.
The municipality reports that following a disciplinary hearing, the employee was found guilty on charges relating to the failure to disclose a conflict of interest and not recusing oneself as a member of the Bid Evaluation Committee during the process of awarding tenders in the Waste Management department where the employee had a personal and/or business relationship with the bidders.
The official was also found to have breached the employer’s Code of Conduct, Anti-Fraud & Corruption Policy, Supply Chain Management Policy and related fiduciary duties in terms of Schedule 2 of the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000.
Executive Mayor Bongani Baloyi has welcomed the dismissal as another step towards ridding the municipality of the rot which poses a threat to Midvaal’s success in ensuring good governance and accountability in handling taxpayers’ monies.
“We continue to have a non-compromising approach towards corruption, maladministration and wasteful expenditure and will stop at nothing in ensuring our communities reap the full benefits of a well-managed public purse,” said Baloyi.
The employee has appealed the dismissal and once appeal processes have been concluded the municipality will inform the community of its outcome.
A criminal case has also been opened with the South African Police Services.
