SHARPEVILLE . – 38-year-old Mampe Likhoeli, who is an HIV/ Aids activist, radio host and founder of the Mampe Likhoeli Foundation celebrated 20 years since she was first diagnosed with HIV.
Likhoeli hosted an event for those who are affected and infected at Dlomo dam recently, as a way to educate people and eliminate the HIV/Aids stigma which exists in society and to also celebrate those living with HIV.
“People tend to think that those infected are the victims, but those who are affected, our family members and those close to us, are the ones that have to face the trauma of people saying nasty things about us. This is why it is so important to teach people that there is nothing to be ashamed of.”
Likhoeli says she has never had to face discrimination as she has always spoken openly about her status. “The reason why I speak freely about being HIV positive is because I don’t want other people to go through what I went through. I want to teach those who have it how to live a positive life and help those that are negative stay negative and this can only happen through dialogue.
“As a mother of three, I am living my life fully and I am working towards achieving my dreams. Nothing will stop me.” Likhoeli, through her foundation, plans to touch more lives and continue living a positive life.
