Man shot and killed in meter taxi

VEREENIGING. – Vereeniging Police Spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda has confirmed that police are investigating a case of murder after a man was shot and killed inside a meter taxi in Vereeniging.

The driver of a meter taxi reported that he received a call to come and pick up some people at a disclosed place of entertainment in Vereeniging. He further stated that four people got into the vehicle on his arrival.

The driver said that while he was driving in Vereeniging, the four had argued about various things. Then two gun shots were fired. The driver said he immediately stopped the car to ask what was going on but the three occupants who were in the back seat immediately fled the scene while the head of the occupant on his left was resting on the dashboard.

Funda states that paramedics and police were deployed to the scene and the man was declared dead. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
The name of the deceased has been confirmed as Sipho Makhanda (37).

Makhanda’s friends have sent him tributes on Facebook, calling him a people’s person and a very cool guy. Speaking on the possession of illegal firearms in the hands of community members, Funda said that the community was using these weapons for the wrong things.

He added that the police are doing everything in their power to prevent such incidents. “Operations are conducted on a regular basis. During these operations some of the things we look for are illegal substances and unlicensed firearms,” Funda concludes.
