Current state of Vereeniging is sickening: Residents

VEREENIGING. - Owing to the alarming increase of robberies, prostitution, house break-ins and the drug trade, about 180 angry residents marched to the Magistrates Court. The march went from the President Stadium to the Courts last Wednesday

The community demanded Police intervention to stop the uncontrollable crime-wave in the area.

They also made a passionate plea to the court to pass stiff sentences on the perpetrators of the aforementioned crimes. Police Brigadier Pule Mokoena and the magistrate of the court, Rhandy Buthelezi received and signed the memo outside the magistrates Court.
Vereeniging has been proclaimed to be rife with prostitution and crime. Residents demanded that prostitution and drug dealers ‘must fall’ as crime is spiralling out of control. The Ward 15 area, especially the CDB, has become a crime nest – in particular prostitution and drug-peddling. The community said that they can’t even walk around freely anymore.
“The brazen drug lords and peddlers have taken control,” they said. Fingers are pointed at some foreigners. In seeking to entice prospective buyers, minors, especially girls, are used to sell drugs. In return the girls get R20 out of the R100 they make.
Others become victims, in sleeping with their bosses in exchange for cash. The residents add that not all law enforcement officers are corrupt. Whistle-blower cops need the support of the community.
The residents are also disappointed and feel undermined by the office of the Sedibeng District Municipality. Bongane Ntshingila, an organiser, said that they have invited Sedibeng District Mayor, Busi Modisakeng: “We were assured that the mayor will otherwise send the MMC for Public Safety, Zaza Raikane.
Magistrate Buthelezi indicated that the Justice Department is worried about the sad state of affairs concerning crime.Brigadier Mokoena said police will respond within the given 7-day period.
