Man commits suicide after court hearing

SHARPEVILLE. - The Botsana family of Tshepiso Phase 1 is still in shock after they learned that their son Teboho ‘Seun’ Botsana (34) had committed suicide. This was at the Vandebijlpark Magistrates Court where he needed R200 for bail.

According to the family, the father of two was arrested by Boipatong Police after they found dagga on him. Seun’s sister Montsheng Botsana (38) says, “Seun was arrested on Monday (November 14) and he appeared in court the following day, but because we could not afford to post his bail, he had to remain in custody.

“He appeared again on Friday (November 18) but there was still no money to post bail for him.” Montsheng says they were only alerted of Seun’s death last week Monday.
“We were getting ready to go and bail him out when we were apprised of his suicide. Police told us that he used his belt to hang himself but, our question is, why did he even have his belt with him as he was still in custody, and why was there no guard with him at the time?”
Seun’s wife Diana Nkala (29) says the incident has really cut her deep. “If only we had the money to bail him out the first time, this would not have happened.
I still can’t believe he is gone. When I visited him he was fine. All he wanted was for his bail to be paid so that he could get out of jail.”
The family said they would miss the deceased as he was a good person.
Vanderbijlpark Police Spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale says, “An inquest into the death of the deceased has been launched. The suspect was found hanging in the toilet, he allegedly used his belt to kill himself.”
We are not denying that the incident might have happened as a result of negligence. The police officer who was supposed to take all the deceased’s belongings is also being investigated,” Makhale concludes.
