Case in limbo as scared witnesses withdraw

The owner of the house set alight decided to withdraw the matter. Makhale said residents are scared to speak up about the gangsters terrorising the community.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The police were left in limbo after witnesses in a case of double-murder and arson withdrew. The state could not rely on only the eyewitness, according to hearsay.

This comes after two members of the Diamond and Mopheme gangs were hacked to death with pangas. The incident happened in Bophelong.
Some families were left with serious injuries. Five shacks and four houses were set alight. The gang violence that almost literally spread like fire left many families with nothing.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said
one suspect was arrested for the murder of Teboho Molakeng. He cannot be linked with the arson.Police were hobbled by the withdrawal of other witnesses, said Makhale.
“Police can do nothing once witnesses decide not to co-operate. Witnesses told Police their lives would be in danger. It would be too risky if the groups found out who was feeding the police with information.”
The owner of the house set alight decided to withdraw the matter. Makhale said residents are scared to speak up about the gangsters terrorising the community.
There are more groups, including Wrong Turn, BT, Alaska, Guptas, Diamonds, Mopheme, Marashiya, 50 Niggers, Ala 10, DF Matsekga. They all operate around Sebokeng.
