VUT rioters want reinstatements

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A three-week protest at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and two weeks of boycotting classes at North West University (NWU) over #Feesmustfall could affect the whole academic year.

Time is running out and there is no sign of students resuming classes anytime soon.In recent weeks, students were forced to vacate the campuses as police charged and fired rubber bullets.

At VUT, students vandalised the Protection Services room, damaged the fridges, electric cables, set the maintenance building alight and also burned some of their mattresses.

The VUT students have ordered management to reinstate all expelled and suspended students who are members of the student Representative Council, SRC. They also want Dr Seroka, acting deputy vice chancellor for governance and organisational transformation, expelled with immediate effect.

“We cannot get into negotiations with the management as long as Dr Seroka is on the campus.” He is lambasted for mismanagement of institution trust funds.

Expelled SRC president Troy Mathebula said the recent meeting with management bore no fruit: “We are not prepared to sit with Seroka.”

VUT said through a spokesperson that the students should stop shifting the goal posts: “It would be better if they approached the issues with some evidence. The institution has engaged with an external auditor to investigate the issue of the trust funds.”

Seroka exclusively told Sedibeng Ster that VUT cannot engage with students at the ‘main gate.’“We need time to engage and unpack the Higher Education Minister’s statement.”

At the NWU, students regrouped at their various residences, aiming to destroy the building. Police and security reacted quickly. Rioters were forced out of the campus.

The students blame management for not being willing to take the #Feesmustfall issue seriously.
