Some 20 persons arrested after land grab attempt

Police reacted with tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse members of the community who apparently tried to buy land in Metsimaholo Municipality this morning (Saturday 15-10-2016)

METSIMAHOLO. – At least 20 EFF members were today arrested by the police near Amelia, Zamdela. They will be charged with involvement in an alleged illegal land grab.  This comes after thousand residents arrived early this morning to “invade” land on the road to Koppies en Deneysville.

Residents desperate to get a home of their own, responded to news that some 2500 stands would be made available for them and that they should get their names listed for the registration process.
However, the police, said the rumours were untrue and that it was an illegal land grab attempt. With the assistance of a helicopter, the Police tried to remove the crowd from the area. Community members had to run for dear life as police responded with teargas en rubber bullets.
Among the arrested was a leader of the EFF, Mr April Motloung, and his fiancé. April is a (PR) councillor at Metsimaholo Local Municipality.
Speaking later to other members outside Sasolburg SAPS office,  Sedibeng Ster learned that they were waiting for their national secretary general Godrich and their EFF legal representative Daly Mpofu. More news about this issue to follow soon.
