Gauteng learners in 29 schools still exposed to asbestos

SEDIBENG.- The Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education Khume Ramulifho MPL reports tha a  total of 29 Gauteng schools are built out of asbestos material and will not be rebuilt before the end of November 2016 to comply with the national minimum norms and standards as set out by the National Department of Education.

“This was revealed by Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to  written questions posed in the Legislature. The Department has identified six schools that are in the planning phase, while the remaining 23 will be replaced over a four year period.

“Schools built entirely out of asbestos should be replaced within three years to comply with the Minimum Uniform Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure.”

Ramulifho states that given the health risks posed by asbestos, it is unacceptable that the Department, which has had ample time to identify and plan, cannot adequately meet the prescribed deadline.

“Learners at these schools will continue to be exposed to unsafe learning conditions due to the Department’s tardy response.

“MEC Lesufi should get the basics right first before pouring funding into major capital projects, and the DA will ensure that all 29 schools’ refurbishment will be prioritised in the 2017/18 financial year.” Ramulifho concludes.
