Community corrections on high level

The launch of Adonai Community Development, an organisation introduced by inmates that will work with the church and the community to implement projects that will educate on crime prevention and drug abuse was a success. The reason was clear as inmates are to educate the community of their own wrong deeds that kept them incarcerated.

SEBOKENG. – The Groenpunt Correctional Service Centre is willing to enhance itself in terms of social rehabilitation and community corrections.

This comes from the inmates’ initiative to launch a community social rehabilitation, social crime prevention and victim offender dialogue that was held at Shekinah Community Church in Sebokeng Zone 14 recently.
The launch of Adonai Community Development, an organisation introduced by inmates that will work with the church and the community to implement projects that will educate on crime prevention and drug abuse was a success. The reason was clear as inmates are to educate the community of their own wrong deeds that kept them incarcerated.
“We dedicate ourselves to educate youth about the consequences of crime. It is better to show them there is hope in a life without crime and drugs. Crime and an unhealthy love of money leads to a life in jail,” said one of the inmates.
The church adopted this initiative as Rachel Mokhele and Rebecca Mothibe vowed to work together with the inmates and help them educate the youth about drug and crime abuse. Near the end, the event became emotion-driven.
Tears were flowing from all the corridors of the precinct. The most touching and heart-breaking closure to the event was when inmates stood before the church and the community and their individual victims, and asked for forgiveness.
Correction services spokesperson Refilwe Tsukudu said, “This is the hardest moment, when an inmate faces his victim and asks for forgiveness. “This is a total level of rehabilitation and a sign of psychological rehabilitation.”
