Twins take on women’s health issues themselves

Twin girls from a primary school in Khutsong have taken it upon themselves to deal
with women’s health issues at their school.
According to 13-year-old Masego and Lesego Kubu, who are both Gr. 8 learners at
Phororong Primary School in Khutsong, they decided that they want to make a difference amongst their fellow learners when they saw the struggles that some others have to go through on a continual basis.
“In my class, there is a girl who always asks for sanitary pads. The armpits of another one are smelly. The other children laugh at them but we bought them some deodorant and sanitary pads,” Masego told the Herald.
This small problem sparked the girls to realise that there are many girls who need help with basic necessities that their families just do not have money for. They started to buy goods to help those who really need it and have even started a campaign to get others involved in the action.
Although they haven’t been able to source sponsors yet, the girls hope they will soon be able to help many girls in need. They have also organised cancer awareness initiatives at their school as part of Women’s Month and made blue and pink ribbons to hand out to fellow learners.
“If we don’t do something ourselves, who will do it?” Lesego asked.
“We don’t want anything in return, we just want to help.
“We hope that, through our programme, we get so big that we can one day even make some of the things the girls need, ourselves,” her sister added.
