PRETORIA – A father and son were arrested late Thursday evening in Midrand on drug trafficking charges.
The Hawk’s Durban Organised team assisted by the Pretoria team and the National Intervention Unit (NIU) raided the Midrand home as part of a search after executing a search warrant.
Approximately 5kg of heroin powder, 28 000 heroin-filled capsules, and 5 000 mandrax tablets were seized during the raid. All this contraband were allegedly manufactured at the premises. The total value of the drugs is estimated at approximately R2.5 million.
The father (52) and son (29) will appear at the Midrand Magistrate Court on Monday on charges connected to running and manufacturing of illegal drugs.
Hawks National Head, Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, said the interprovincial operation was an excellent example of successes that could be achieved when various police directorates cooperated.
“This group is making a living profiting from the addictions of others. Drug trafficking has no room in the modern society. Those who think can use our roads, ports and suburbs should forget about it. The Hawks since the establishment of the Narcotics Enforcement Bureau in February 2016 has seized more than R300 million worth of drugs countrywide. We will continue and work hard to seize drugs and also expose those that live in the lap of luxury and profit from the misery of ordinary citizens on the ground.
“When I took office, I committed to work hard, crime is my number one enemy. Drug traffickers and manufacturers be warned, will not only arrest those who are involved in this type of organised crime, but we will also come after your ill-gotten gains. Criminals need to know that drug activities will not be tolerated in our communities, and the results of these operations go a long way in sending that message”.
