MEYERTON.- Alleged failure of the Midvaal Local Municipality to address workers has once again resulted in protest action by the members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU).
The union states that today is the last day of the seven days that the municipality was given to respond to the memorandum handed over last week.
The workers state that they want a better salary, amongst other things and that failure to address their issues will result in continued protest action.
The chairman of SAMWU Midvaal Lucky Nhlapo says, “All we want is to be addressed, but people are locking offices and running away.” Nhlapo told the workers that they should refrain from vandalising any vehicles or stores as their problem were only with their employer.
They are unhappy about how the Municipal Manager, Albert de Klerk runs things. They state that he is biased and only gives some employees promotions and they want him gone.
The Meyerton police are on the scene to monitor the situation and many businesses have closed for the day as a result of the protest.
