Potchefstroom: Employees of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Morokweng displayed an act of bravery in the spirit of ubuntu, when they assisted a 36-year-old woman from Selosesha Section to give birth on Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

The trio, Senior Provisioning Administration Clerk Oalositse Kupi, Data Typist Refilwe Sereko and Foreman (Cleaner) Lorato Selebogo were on duty at the police station when they heard a scream and saw a pregnant woman who had just passed the station sitting down along the street. After rushing to her they found that she was already in active labour.

Warrant Officer Gaorongwe Jogani rushed to a nearby clinic to ask for assistance, while people assisting the mother at the station quickly used blankets to section off a private area for the mother from the public.

The Emergency Medical and Rescue Services (EMRS) paramedics arrived and took the mother and her baby to the clinic. Both the mother and the baby weighing 2,3 kg’s, are in good health.  The mother has decided to name the baby Keaoleboga meaning “I am thankful to the Lord”. However, people who assisted on that day have nicknamed the miracle baby girl as “Omaatla” which means “The Lord is Mighty”.

In the spirit of giving the members have contributed funds to help the mother with clothes for little Keaoleboga but affectionately known to them as Omaatla.

“We are happy and proud that God gave us the courage and ability to assist the woman to safely deliver the baby,” said Oalositse Kupi when asked how they feel about the incident.
