Police captain in lethal shoot-out

A Police captain was shot dead and a Community Policing Forum (CPF) member sustained a serious wound to the stomach.Police spokesperson Captain Attie Loate said the incident happened on May 4 at around 20:00 in Bophelong Ext 4.
This comes after patrolling Police responded to a crime scene.

A woman ran to them for help, telling police that suspects had robbed her of R1000. Captain Kahle Aziel Maduna (57), who was the Bophelong commander working on Social Crime was shot and died shortly after at Union Hospital in Alberton.
Police said the robbery victim was hosting a birthday party for her child when the robbers ‘gate-crashed’ the party. She told police that a group of armed suspects searched people in the yard.

While this was going on the woman somehow escaped and ran out of her yard to look for help. Police rushed to the scene.
As they approached the house, the well-armed suspects, started firing in their direction.

A third patroller managed to jump into the police-marked vehicle to rush the victims to the hospital.Maduna was transferred to Union Hospital in Alberton but was later declared dead. The CPF member was transported to Sebokeng Hospital. Later, two suspects, both aged 25 were arrested. No firearms have been confiscated.

They will be charged with three murders, attempted murder, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of firearms, ammunition, and robbery. The suspects appeared on May 7 in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court.
The late Maduna lived in Sebokeng’s Zone 10, Extension 1.
