Minister launches project to address water shortage

Mokonyane: Rand water has been able to make water available to hundreds of South Africans. This project will not only benefit the people of Gauteng, it is all about building capacity for the state to transform South Africa in a radical way.

VEREENIGING. – In a bid to address the water shortage currently faced by South Africa, Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane last week launched a water augmentation project at the Rand Water Zuikerbosch Water Pumping Station.
“We are here to restore the dignity of the people of South Africa by making sure that water, which is a basic right, is received by all.”

The event was dominated by Sedibeng youth seeking employment opportunities.
Mokonyane said while the project would at the beginning create many contract jobs for general workers, it was necessary for the youth to go to school for the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain such big projects.

“Rand water has been able to make water available to hundreds of South Africans. This project will not only benefit the people of Gauteng, it is all about building capacity for the state to transform South Africa in a radical way,” she said.

In his welcoming address, Emfuleni Local Municipal Mayor Simon Mofokeng thanked Mokonyane for launching the project at the right time because of the drought that has befallen Sedibeng and neighbouring areas.

“We hope that the minister will be back here very soon to launch the Leeukuil project because the Boiketlong Housing Development Project will only become a success if this project is a success.”
