Four women were raped within three days in separate incidents Ikageng, suggesting that this crime is spiralling out of control within this community.
According to WO Ishmael Mohutsiwa, SAPS spokesperson, a 21-year-old was raped and robbed near Shaun Pollock cricket grounds at about 23:10 on Saturday after being dropped off by a taxi.
According to the victim, a tall male walked past her and, a few seconds later, someone came from behind, put his hand over her mouth and pushed her to the ground. The man was armed with a knife. The tall man returned and started searching her, taking R380 in cash and her black and silver Sony Xperia phone worth R2 000. He then gripped her hands tightly while his accomplice raped her. They then fled in the direction of a nearby church.
The victim, who sustained injuries to the back of her head, got up and went to her grandmother’s place. She reported the incident the next day.
In another incident at about 03:30 on Sunday, an 18-year-old teenager alleges that two knife-wielding men raped her while she and her intoxicated boyfriend were walking home from one of the pubs.
According to her, the men followed them from the pub, grabbed them and robbed them as they got to the Shaun Pollock cricket grounds. They took R1 100 in cash, an Alcatel phone worth R1 000 and a Lumia phone worth R2 300. After robbing them, the suspects undressed them. One man pinned the boyfriend to the ground while the other pushed the teenager to the ground and raped her. During the incident, the boyfriend managed to run away and the second suspect also raped the girl.
WO Mohutsiwa says a 27-year-old was raped by a friend at 23:55 on Sunday and a 37-year-old was raped by her boyfriend at 02:00 on Monday.
“There was only one arrest in these four incidents,” he said.
As he has done so many times before, Mohutsiwa warned the community not to walk alone at night.
“They should rather ask to be delivered to their doorstep or ask a family member to wait for them where the taxi stops.”
He warned that the Shaun Pollock cricket grounds have become one of the crime hotspots. He also warned against carrying large sums of money and said a drunk person walking in the street becomes a target of crime.
