Boiketlong informal settlement, commonly known as ‘Serope se a benya’, last Thursday morning saw residents demonstrating their anger on the streets demanding houses, water and electricity. Many people have been injured, killed and some have disappeared in these yearly protests.

As they took to the streets Mofokeng’s attempt to address the angry residents was too little too late: “We will only listen to the Gauteng MEC for Co-operative Governance, Paul Mashatile,” residents said. They ran amok, barricading parts of Moshoeshoe Road and Waterdal Road.

The violence spread to Potchefstroom and Vereeniging, as well as to Vanderbijlpark and Sebokeng intersections.
