MIDVAAL. – The community of Midvaal recently handed over a memorandum and a petition with over one thousand signatures to Democratic Alliance (DA) MPL Mike Moriarty.

This was done recently at the Meyerton Police Station where representatives from the SAPS, Council and DA were present. The purpose of the handing over is to get assistance from national and provincial government to help the police in Meyerton including the community at large in their fight against drugs.

Midvaal Local Municipality Speaker Freddie Peters says, “A lot of work went into this because there are a thousand signatures on the petition. What we want is for the provincial leadership to help the local people including the police with the fight against drugs.”

Peters stated that Midvaal, although not listed as the worst, had problems with drugs just like all the other communities.

Midvaal is said to be plagued more and more by drug trafficking and drug-related crimes perpetrated by young people seeking jobs. When unsuccessful, they fall prey to drug dealers. These youngsters are said to end up living on the streets and taxi ranks, either begging or burgling cars and businesses.

Midvaal Constituency Officer Mariana Kruger says, “This petition is against drugs and drug-related crimes in our municipal boundaries. This substance abuse destroys individuals, families, communities and countries. This petition is to be handed over to show our concern about blatant drug dealing in our communities,” concludes Kruger.
