Excellent results for Flavius Mareka

SEDIBENG.- A pilot project between the Chemical Industry Education and Training Authority (CHIETA), Sasol and the Flavius Mareka TVET College has produced excellent results for unemployed learners enrolled for the CHIETA’s occupational qualifications required by industry. The qualifications are Chemical Operations, Electrical Engineering and Welding based on industry acceptable learnerships for which the theoretical component is offered by the College. This tripartite partnership was established in support of the TVET mandate to train for industry-specific occupational trades.
As part of the project, all learners had to complete the Media Works Foundational Learning Competence (FLC) programme in Communication and Maths literacy. Of the 120 learners who registered for the FLC course, 55 students obtained between 80% and 95%; 32 students obtained between 70% and 79% and 25 obtained passes of between 50% and 69%.
“It is not just another training course. It is as important as a Matric qualification. You cannot do trade or occupational training without it,” commented Jackie Carroll, CEO of Media Works. Vicky Pillay, the facilitator of FLC at Flavius Mareka TVET College, said: “The Media Works FLC programme is an empowering course that enables students to deal successfully with occupational learning. The workbook is user friendly with exercises that are carefully planned and presented in an interesting format. The time frame to complete the course is adequate with sufficient time for revision.”
The success of the pilot project has led to a second group of 120 learners being enrolled for the programme in 2015. In addition, the project received high praise from Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who visited the facility last year.
