Hand hygiene can save lives

Midvaal Hospital in a plight to celebrate World Hand Hygiene Day, held an event under the theme ‘Hand Hygiene for Life’ to educate the public about the importance of keeping one’s hands clean. The event was held in partnership with Hoer Skool Drie Riviere, Ampath and VCR radio station. Hannetjie Deventer who is a nurse at the hospital says, “Our main concern is Stopping Hospital Bacteria on hands from spreading and we are doing it as part of our community awareness.”

VEREENIGING. – Midvaal Hospital in a plight to celebrate World Hand Hygiene Day, held an event under the theme ‘Hand Hygiene for Life’ to educate the public about the importance of keeping one’s hands clean.
The event was held in partnership with Hoer Skool Drie Riviere, Ampath and VCR radio station. Hannetjie Deventer who is a nurse at the hospital says, “Our main concern is Stopping Hospital Bacteria on hands from spreading and we are doing it as part of our community awareness.”
According to information that was shared at the event, using soap and water kills most of the bacteria on one’s hands. Research shows that hand washing is a simple and fundamental way of reducing infectious diseases such as colds and flu being spread by hand contact. Thorough hand washing aids in the reduction and removal of potentially harmful bacteria from the hands.
Deventer says that Hand hygiene is the number one way of preventing infections and hand bacteria.“Hand Hygiene betters prognosis in hospital.In a flashmob that we did today, we showed the public how important and easy it is to keep one’s hands clean.”
The event ended wit a draw where sponsored prizes were given away to winners.
“The event was a great success and people really came to support and learn about hand hygiene. Nursing Colleges and hospitals have all embarked on this project. It is all about being educated and educating the public in order to save lives.” Deventer concludes.
