Three years after a 16-year-old boy was brutally stabbed to death in Promosa, his mother still does not have closure.
Kapu Abrahams (51), the mother of Mpho “Gift” Abrahams, is still haunted by what happened at 23:00 on 24 August, 2012 and was reported in the Herald of 7 September. The police have since arrested 3 suspects in their mid-twenties, one of whom is a cousin of the deceased. They appeared at the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court on 14 May. Two of them remain in custody while one was released on bail. The case was postponed until 6 and 7 August for the trial.
During their court appearance, the Baagi community organisation picketed outside the court in solidarity with the family and for justice. Its leader, Curtis Johnson said that justice delayed is justice denied. He said his organisation would continue to support the family until sentencing of the suspects, and urged the fraternal ministries and political parties to come on board.
Gift, a Gr. 10 learner at Promosa Secondary School was murdered three days before his sixteenth birthday. He was found in a pool of blood. His red and white Nike sneakers, black and white jacket and Samsung cell phone were missing. He died on his way to the Potchefstroom Hospital with his mother at his side.
“His last words were that he was very tired and needed to rest,” she recalls. “I never expected him to die.” “I have had a stroke and I have been in and out of hospital. Gift’s murder still haunts me. Even though it has been three years, I still can’t sleep when I think about my beloved son.
I know he won’t come back to me, but if I see his murderers behind bars, at least it will give me closure,” she said, grief still etched across her face.
