VEREENIGING. – Riverside High School Learners have in the past few months been working together in a bid to raise R10 000 to buy school shoes for needy children in primary schools, especially those in rural areas. This project is the brainchild of Grade 12 learner Malefatsane Masitha in conjunction with NGO ‘Youth Development through Investigation and Dissemination of Information’ (YDIDI).

Riverside Principal Evald Makgwatha says “We are very fortunate to have had the most popular Youth Radio Station broadcast from our school for three hours. Y-FM is mostly listened to by the youth and this is how we were able to send our message across.”

Makgwatha states that he thought the idea was good as it instilled a sense of giving and appreciation in all the students. “Another important thing is that learners need to be valued. Many of the youth have big dreams and aspirations, and by seeing all the radio personalities here, they will realise that they too can achieve their dreams,” Makgwatha concludes.

The event ended with a career session where different institutions discussed subject choices, careers and funding with the students.
