Pirates and Magesi share the spoil

Pirates gained confidence as the game progressed, putting wonderful touches together.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- It was a reunion of former teammates when Orlando Pirates and Magesi shared the spoils in the DSTV Diski Challenge (DDC).

The game played at Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday ended in a goalless draw.

The two former teammates, Joseph “Duku Duku” Makhanya and Tlou Segolela, who happen to be good friends, were sitting on opposite benches. It was a trip down memory lane with these two reflecting on their era playing together at Pirates. Makhanya is in charge of Pirates DDC team as head coach, with Segolela responsible for Magesi as a team manager.

As expected, it was a fast-flowing game with both teams on the attack and looking for an early goal. Magesi looked more promising in the early stages of the game, but were denied an obvious scoring opportunity by brilliant goalkeeping from the Pirates goalkeeper. However, Pirates gained confidence as the game progressed, putting wonderful touches together – much to the delight of their bench. Pirates could have gone to half time with a lead, but failed to convert their chances into a goal.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Segolela said it was a great game of football even though it ended up in a goalless draw. “I would say draw is a fair result, because both sides came into this game well prepared. It was two teams who appreciate ball possession.”

WORDS FROM THE COACH: Joseph Makhanya: “We started very slow but gained momentum as the game progressed. In my opinion we could have gone to half time at least leading by two goals if we converted our chances into goals. We will go back to work on our finishing and decision-making in the final third. I’m confident that we are going to reactive all of this in our next game.”
