BOIPATONG.- Rose “Pona” Jijane story’s will inspire many generations to come.

This former Bafana Bafana defender shocked many when she decided to join a local athletics club. No one saw this coming even her former teammates were surprised by her move. Apart from playing Banyana Banyana, Jijane played for Bophelong Ladies FC and Soweto Ladies. She also had a short sting playing abroad. She’s been collecting medals left, right and centre, finishing first, second or third position in every race.
During the Annual Vaal River City Marathon held at Isak Steyl Stadium recently, Jijaneagain placed on the podium, collecting medals like they are going out of fashion.

She ran the 42.2km distance.

Her decisions to become a runner also stunned former chairperson, Jabu Khoza at Bophelong Ladies Club. This is where Jijane established herself as one of the best athletes in this region. This didn’t come as a surprise when she received a call to join Banyana Banyana. She had a successful career with the women’s national team. She is one of the most capped Banyana Banyana players alongside Portia Modise. This is what she had to say in an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster’s S’kuluma no…

Q: How did you end up being an athlete?

A: It is not something that I planned but one day when I wake up, I decided to go to train with those runners.

Q: I thought you would be involved in the development of women’s football, but you chose athletics. Explain!

A: Yes, I was involved with football development for a certain time, but I thought I must do something with my life. I was still active, training on my own.

Q: Were your teammates surprised to see you joining athletics?

A: In fact, I took everyone by surprise because no one anticipated this to happen.

Q: What are your future plans with football or athletics?

A: I want to write a book about my life, football career and now athletics. There is a lot to tell about my life that will inspire many young people out there.

Q: Do you see yourself returning to football especially women’s football after you retire from athletics?

A: Mmm, this is a difficult question to answer but I would love to contribute in both football and athletics. I have found love in athletics and I would like to be involved in the development of athletics as well.
