Screen dreams become reality

The students received their certificates as well as medals and trophies.

VANDERBIJLPARK – The South Africa Arts and Culture Youth Forum (SAACYF) in collaboration with several stakeholders hosted a certificate handover ceremony at the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s head office in Vanderbijlpark on August 21.

The aim was to celebrate 25 emerging filmmakers from the region as they successfully completed the six weeks of From Script to Screen training programme. The programme started on July 17 and concluded on August 21.

They collaborated with Duma ka Ndlovu Academy, the Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Gauteng Film Commission and the National Film and Video Foundation.

Students shared their heartfelt messages on WhatsApp stating how grateful they are for the opportunity they received.

During the training, participants engaged in weekly workshops and training sessions. It was complemented by practical on-set experiences during the last weeks.

Palesa Makgato, the project manager at SAACYF, emphasised how amazing it was to work with the class of 2024, stating: “They were full of passion and eager to learn. Now that we equipped them with the essential skills needed to thrive in the industry, the world is waiting for them. Our vision was to empower them and give them skills to step in to the industry and prepare them to tell their stories. The future of film and television is in good hands with these talented individuals.”

The president of SAACYF, Romeo Ramuada, was also present at the ceremony to celebrate with the students. Bishop Obedience Masakona was there to inspire and give them words of encouragement. The students received their certificates as well as medals and trophies. The families of the graduates were presents to celebrate with them.

The handover ceremony marked a significant milestone in their journey. The event was a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of the students as well as the guidance and support of the faculty and staff. The ceremony was a celebration not only of their achievements but also of the bright future that lies ahead for them.

Naledi Tsotetsi, who graduated as top of the class, explained how honoured she was to take first place, stating: “I am humbled. Our class was filled with very talented filmmakers, and to be at the top of the class is very affirming for how talented I am as a filmmaker. It was great being part of this project. The facilitators were seasoned professionals who were passionate about imparting their knowledge.”
