NWU student killed, boyfriend hangs himself

Another sad day for NWU community as the university mourns the passing of their fourth-year BEd student.

VANDERBIJLPARK – A dark cloud continues to hover above the North-West University in Vanderbijlpark.

More shocking news, this time involving the brutal murder of a fourth-year student has rocked the campus.

This comes after Mamohlotsi Nchabeleng (22) was killed in cold blood allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend.

According to the institution, Nchabeleng’s lifeless body was discovered in her room at a private residence on Monday, 19 August.

Professor Sibusiso Chalufu – Acting Executive Director: Student Life and DVC at the campus said “This followed the discovery of the body of the deceased boyfriend (not an NWU student), together with a note at his home in Sharpeville.”

Chalufu said the university is providing counselling to Nchabeleng’s family and affected students.

“We urge all affected students and staff to go to the Student Counselling and Development Centre at building 14, split level 3,” he said.

Vanderbijlpark police spokesperson, Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu confirmed the incident.

Sigcu stated “A case docket of murder was opened. It is alleged that the family of the deceased approached the police about their son who was found hanging at his home in Sharpeville. A suicide note was found next to the deceased body, of which it stated that he killed his girlfriend staying at the res and that was a reason he also killed himself.”

“However, the police rushed to the mentioned place as per the suicide note and found the lady in her bed. The paramedics were called and declared her also dead,” said Sigcu.
