Cross Country Championship League lives up to expectations

It was a stiff competition in all categories.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Athletics Vaal Triangle (AVT) Cross Country Championship League lived up to everyone’s expectations.

This meeting, which attracted hundreds of runners from all over the country, took place at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday. The athletes from as far as KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) came in their numbers to be part of this championship. The event saw young and old competing against each other in different categories. The highlight of the day was the development race where kids from the age of eight years old competed against each other.

It was a two-horse race in the men’s 10km section with Mohau Masoenyane finishing first and Kholisile Ntobale finishing in second place. Andre Venter came third. However, Ntobale was declared the winner even though he finished second. According to AVT’s Morena Tsotetsi, Ntobale was handed the gold medal as a winner in this category because Masoenyane’s club was from KZN.

In the women section, Zanthe Taljaard came first with Tsholofelo Phakoe and Nomathandazo Maduna coming in second and third respectfully.

Tsotetsi told Sedibeng Ster Sport this cross country championship league lived up to expectations – it was a stiff competition in all categories.
Some of the notable names who attended the event include legendary athletes, Norman Dlomo and Petrus Mohalajeng, who are involved in the development of athletics in Sedibeng.

“We are now looking forward to the Athletics South Africa Cross Country Championships that will take place at the same venue on September 7. Again, we are expecting a stiff competition because this race is one of the biggest events on the athletics calendar,” said Tsotetsi.
