VANDERBIJLPARK – From the streets of Vanderbijlpark emerges a remarkable young talent in the South African art scene namely, Try Phoku. His art cognoscente can be seen in his tremendous portraits and inspiring journey. Despite being a phenomenal visual artist, Phoku is a third-year student at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) studying Performing Arts.

Phoku’s passion for artistry ignited at the age of 12. This passion, through self-directed dedication, has sharpened a distinctive style that has set him apart. Phoku’s portraits are not merely representations, but rather delicate explorations of the human experience, capturing the complication of emotion and inner light with remarkable depth.

Phoku explained that when he is drawing, he feels like he’s escaping his problems, stating: “Drawing is my passion and when I draw I am escaping from all my problems without moving. I feel complete and like I have found myself. I live by the philosophy that emphasises inspiration, connection, and community, encouraging emerging artists to experiment, take risks and cultivate supportive networks.”
