SPCA: This is illegal!

VEREENIGING. - After receiving a concerning call from a local business reporting a truck driver allegedly smuggling a tortoise in the truck's compartment, a SPCA inspector was immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Upon investigation, it was revealed that the driver’s intentions were quite different. He claimed to have rescued the tortoise from a perilous situation, preventing it from being harmed by passing vehicles as it attempted to cross a busy road.

“Wanting to provide the tortoise with a safe home, the driver decided to take it home with him,” his actions were explained.

The local SPCA branches needs your support.

Understanding the importance of returning the tortoise to its natural habitat, the SPCA team intervened.

The tortoise was removed from the driver’s care and taken to a local veterinarian for examination.

From there, it was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where it would undergo rehabilitation before being released back into the wild (where it belongs).

“We urge everyone: if you encounter a tortoise or any wildlife attempting to cross the road, please assist them in crossing safely and do not take them home!

“It is illegal to transport indigenous wildlife or keep them without a permit,” the SPCA explains.

If you encounter wildlife in distress, don’t hesitate to call the Vereeniging/Vanderbijlpark SPCA at 016 422 1505 for immediate assistance and guidance.

“Remember, every creature deserves a chance to live free and wild. Together, let’s protect and preserve our wildlife. All animals matter,” the SPCA concluded.
